The Maryland Department of Labor Heat Stress Standards are in effect as of September 30, 2024. The regulation applies to both indoor and outdoor workplaces where there is employee exposure to a heat index at or above 80 degrees Fahrenheit, with few exceptions. The regulations require employers to develop a written heat-related illness prevention plan, monitor the heat index in work areas, and provide shade, drinking water, training, and other controls to prevent heat-related illnesses in the workplace. This presentation will focus on key factors that contribute to heat stress and the requirements of the new regulation.

Cristina has been an industrial hygienist with Maryland Occupational Safety and Health for the past 18 years as an inspector, instructor, speaker, supervisor, and manager. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science, a Master’s degree in Health Science, and is a Certified Industrial Hygienist.
