Our maha periva was born on 20th may, 1894 ,under the anuradha natshatra, into a kannada brahmin family in villupuram,as the second son of Shri.Subramanya sastri. His father, Shri. subramanya sastri was an district education officer in the same district. Maha periva was named, Swaminatha, after the Lord Swaminathan of Swamimalai.

Right from a young age, he was very clever and brilliant.He had a very normal childhood.He began his early education from the school where his father was incharge at.He excelled in many subjects and was an exceptional student !

it was in 1905, When his parents performed the Upayanam, or the Poonal ceremony, which qualifies a brahim boy to continue his vedic studies.

During the childhood of the Acharya, his father consulted an astrologer who, upon studying the boy's horoscope, is said to have been so stunned that he prostrated himself before the boy exclaiming that "One day the whole world will fall at his feet".In 1906, the 66th Acharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham performed the annual Chaturmasyam (a forty-day annual ritual performed by Hindu ascetics while remaining in one place), in a village near Tindivanam in Tamil Nadu. This was Swaminathan's first exposure to the Mutt and its Acharya. Later, Swaminathan accompanied his father whenever he visited the Mutt where the Acharya was deeply impressed by the young boy.
