The purpose of this channel is to inspire people to take up, or stick with, plogging. Plogging, the eco-friendly practice of jogging, walking, or pretty much any other outside activity done while picking up litter, is one of the simplest and most impactful ways to protect and restore the environment. It’s something that most people could do most days.

The Plog Vlog videos offer practical tips and inspiring stories to encourage the growth of supportive communities of eco-conscious individuals making a difference through picking up rubbish. It also tells the story of me trying out strategies to encourage others to plog.

The Plogging Game (full instructions below) was developed for my students, and then realised the potential it could have if it was played across Australia and the world; please share it!

About this video:

My first cycling plog along Brisbane’s Bulimba Creek (between the suburbs of Runcorn and Sunnybank) resulted in a fortuitous set of discoveries, including:

• finding a Stand Up for Nature sign that’s part of the Queensland Conservation Council’s current campaign to protect Queensland’s forests and woodlands, and the 1049 threatened species that they contain ( see https://www.queenslandconservation.or... ),
• discovering an incredibly clean waterhole that was covered in healthy aquatic plants,
• stumbling across the remains of a treehouse,
• chatting about calisthenics, gymnastics, trampolining, circus performing, and acrobatics with a handstand push up guy at one of my favourite adult gym parks,
• de-draining fresh bubble tea,
• meeting a fan in a park,
• triaging plastics over tissues,
• crossing the beautiful Cool Forest Bridge twice (that’s what I call it), and
• finding a gross flower (maybe?).

Why is Plogging Important to Me?
I am a former fitness instructor, behavioural science researcher, and environmental protection officer. I’m also currently a teacher. I care greatly about people’s wellness and the wellness of our environment. Plogging ticks every box!

The Plogging Game - Instructions

The Plogging Game can be played by anyone who enjoys moving around outside. Here are the rules:

The referee chooses a plogging location that the competitors do not know in advance. That way the location cannot be pre-seeded with known rubbish locations.

Competitors stand on the starting line with their hands in the air, just as if they were being held up by a bushranger. This makes sure that nobody has already collected rubbish in their hands. The referee does a quick visual check for bulging pockets that might contain previously collected rubbish.

When the referee blows the whistle, the competitors run like maniacs in search of as much rubbish as they can collect in two minutes.

After two minutes has passed, the referee blows the whistle two times. Competitors have 30 seconds to return back over the starting line. If they take more than 30 seconds, the score for each rubbish item is halved. Scores are halved again for every additional 10 seconds.

This is how the rubbish is scored by the referee(s):

1. Biodegradable rubbish does not count.
2. 10 points per piece of unrecyclable rubbish.
3. 20 points per piece of recyclable rubbish.
4. Rubbish that appears to have been torn up by the competitor is counted as one piece.
5. Any biohazards MUST not be picked up.

The referee(s) calculates the results whilst the competitors wash their hands and generally have a great time chatting.
