The issue of transformation in South African universities was thrust into the spotlight again this past week following the release of an online documentary Luister. Since its release on 20 August, the 34-minute documentary has been watched more than 300,000 times on YouTube and has been trending on social media across South Africa, and seems to be spreading. Last week tense scenes played out at Stellenbosch University and Elsenburg Agricultural training Institute outside the Boland town as students demanded the 50/50 language policy. The university's management has come out and said that they are working very hard to become more inclusive but there seems to be a gap between their sincere intentions and the reality experienced by some.
