Most marijuana toxicity occurs after a dog ingests homemade special baked goods, but some will eat the plant itself.
It usually takes about 30 minutes for a dog to start showing signs of toxicity, but it may even take up to a few hours.
The most common sign is ataxia, or difficulty walking, or standing.
Many dogs also have increased sensitivity to motion, sound, or touch.
This may be evident by them being easily startled, or excessively blinking with any motion towards their face. In veterinary medicine, we test this by doing something called a “menace response.”
The dog will likely be lethargic.
Some develop urinary incontinence and dribble pee.
Often, these signs will resolve on their own, but it is not fun for your dog.
For mild cases, we give them fluids, anti-nausea medicine, and a quiet place to sleep it off while their vitals are monitored.
The prognosis is usually pretty good, but in severe cases, dogs can develop vomiting, tremors, dilated pupils, and become comatose.
With the most severe toxicity, seizures can occur. In these cases, intravenous lipids may be used, as well as anti-seizure medications.
Another common issue we see is secondary toxicity from whatever the marijuana was mixed with. If the dog ate pot brownies, chocolate toxicity may actually be more dangerous.
Gummies may contain xylitol, which is extremely toxic and can kill dogs.
If you know that your dog got into something, please bring the label with the ingredients so your vet can double-check them.
I promise, your vet will NOT report you, even if you live where it is not legal.
We just want what’s best for the pet, and in order to do that, we need all the information possible.
Sometimes a urine test will diagnose it, so your vet may reach for these, but it’s important to keep in mind they aren’t 100% effective and will miss some cases, as some animals do not produce the same metabolites that the urine test assesses for.
Some pets are fine within a few hours, but most will take 1-2 days to feel completely normal.
