AJA Cion Skin Tone Test (VS Panasonic Lumix S5) | $600 AJA Cion Series

In the ring today, we have the AJA Cion competing against the Panasonic Lumix S5 for who can produce the best skin tones. For the test today, I used the AJA Cion recording internally in ProRes 422 with the Helios 44-2 Lens and the Lumix S5 recording Internally in 10-bit 422 LongGOP with a Jupiter 9.

The results were a little surprising! The Cion's baked in looks are pretty terrible. The skin tones are really off and not great. Looking in the monitor (BM Video Assist 3G), it looked horrible. Throwing it in Resolve, recording really flat actually didn't look horrible. It was a little green and the shadows crushed really easily but after adjusting the tint, the colors were really natural. The dynamic range does remain a serious issue, though.

Let me know your thoughts. Please excuse the lack of polish on this one. It took longer than I really had available to put this one out but I know you wanted to see more footage! Maybe one day I'll get better with Davinci Resolve.
