From the Hay Bluff car park that sits right at the start of the walk, take the trail in a southeasterly directly up the escarpment ahead of you. After approximately 600 metres the trail swings right and ascends gradually up the escarpment face. At the top of the ridge, turn left and follow the obvious trail for just over 200 metres to the summit of Hay Bluff.

Retrace your steps to the top of the ridge but now continue along the ridge top on this relatively flat trail. The path will then descend crossing the road at Gospel Pass and climb once more on the gentle ascent to the summit of Twmpa.

Follow the trail in a south-westerly direction from the summit for approximately 660 metres when you will reach some rocks sticking out of the ridge to your right. Here, turn sharp right and follow the trail that descends from the ridge.

Further down, continue along the grassy path through the ferns until you intercept a more obvious trail. Follow this northwesterly and then southeasterly until you reach a small country road. Turn right and follow this back to the car park in around 2.2 km.

Following the somewhat challenging climb to the summit of Hay Bluff, it is a fairly sedate walk from thereon. Choose a good weather day and you will be spoilt with a variety of superb views, particularly those off to the west and southwest.

The descent down Twmpa’s escarpment can be a little boggy in places, as well as parts of the trail leading up to the small country road on the return sector of the walk.

The trail is not always perfectly clear, particularly following the descent from Twmpa. This is where a good hiking app or GPS will come in useful. I found the OutdoorActive hiking app incredibly useful along these sections as it ensured that I stuck to the correct trail simply by keeping myself aligned with the trail markings on the app.
