Hi, my name is Anita. We are here to talk a little about what identity means and more importantly to discuss what it means to hold an identity in relation to a language. For me it's a little complicated because, well, my dad is American, from the United States, and my mom is from Argentina, but I grew up in Mallorca. And, well, i went to public school the whole time I lived in Mallorca and that's why I learned Catalan. I still have lots of friends in Mallorca and I still have the luck of finding people around the world that speak Catalan, and for this reason it is a little part of my identity, and something that I am very proud of. Speaking Catalan is very special for me because there are not many people in the world who do speak it, so when you find someone who does its a celebration! Its not the same as saying: Oh, so you speak Spanish, or, you speak English? Awsome! - When you find someone who speaks Catalan it is really something special. You immediately have something in common that is only understood between you. This is why its important to me. There are also many other things that define my identity, but Catalan holds something very special, because its so small so exclusive. Like with the other languages I can speak, I couldn't say that its that much of a celebration when you find another person that can speak it. No matter if you run into someone from Mallorca or from Barcelona, Menorca, or Ibiza or Valencia, even if the accents are different you still have a small union. Its a very rare thing in the world and I think its beautiful to be part of it.
