Описание к видео Beginner Sight Reading for Guitar - Lesson 9 (Berklee Method)

Lothar's Guitar School - Beginner Sight Reading for Guitar - Lesson 9 (Berklee Method)

This is lesson 9 in a series of 10 lessons of sight reading for guitar. It's from the ground up and at the end of this course you will be able to read lead sheets and melodies of most popular songs and e.g. the Real Book. In lesson 9 we will read arpeggios and melodic rhythms in the 5th position. The pdfs for this course are available for FREE at [email protected]

1. Speed is not important. If the video is too fast - slow it down. When you practice on your own set the metronome at a comfortable level. Always use a metronome or drum machine.
2. Learn to make mistakes. If you make a mistake - continue and find your way back into the next measure. Never stop.
3. Look at the piece before you play. Check the time signature, key signature, repeat marks form and possible difficulties before you play. Check the notes and find an appropriate fingering. Analyze the rhythm separately.
4. Try not to read note for note, but larger units. The same way you read a book - you don't read letter by letter.
5. Always tap your foot and count in your head.
6. Use alternate picking. Play downbeats with a downstroke and upbeats with an upstroke.
7. Play like you mean it. Always make music.

Guitarists very often don't like to read music, but it's the universal language of musicians. This way you can remember and prepare music. Once mastered it opens complete new worlds and broadens musical horizons.

Here's a quote from John Scofield: "Standard music notation is the only method of communicating music other than using your own ear. I think that reading music is essential, not only for understanding music, but for playing guitar professionally as well."

"I can't sight-read classical etudes - I would have to see it and learn it. But yeah, I can read. It is a wonderful tool. It's like speaking another language. Anyone that says reading music can hurt your playing is either stupid, lazy, or ignorant." (Steve Lukather)

"So I’ve been trying to do that kind of stuff, and I’ll read over stuff that I’ve written out (i.e. transcriptions), different ideas, just pretty much everyday – and then sometimes try to do a little bit of classical, sight reading from classical books." (Mike Stern)
