A Via Ferrata Adventure - Dolomites - Tofana Di Mezzo - Italy

A Via Ferrata journey along with a bit of a visual explanation of how this system works (if you haven't tried it)...

On 12th November I both took some shots and some video to give a bit of a feel of what a Via Ferrata is like. I'd heard about Via Ferratas years ago, but given Australia doesn't have any - I was always keen to go try some one day.

This day out was an attempt to just get as high as I could on Tofana Di Mezzo. Summiting was a bit of a hope... even in summer this route is regarded as nearly a whole day affair - and then you get to ride the cable car down.

In the beginnings of winter when I tried it the mountain was empty, the cable car was closed and descending probably would have involved down climbing the entire route... Much slower than a cable car!

Like all my mountain adventures (and I really don't have that many under my belt) - it is the gradual stretching of comfort zones that allows further exploration into longer days and longer climbs. There were a couple of moments during this day that stretched my comfort zone.

Lastly - I have to say Via Ferratas rock if you happen to be by yourself and still want to go and get some moderate mountain miles covered. You're well protected (When there is cable to clip to :) - and you can practice moving over a lot of moderate terrain relatively safely.

So go book a ticket to northern Italy, drop me a line for where to find Via Ferrata information and have a crack!

Enjoy.
