School friends Leiber and Stoller, both 19, white, born on the East Coast but living in Los Angeles, were inspired by the records of Kansas City blues shouter Big Joe Turner, a.k.a. "The Boss of the Blues". Motivated by their love of rhythm and blues, they wrote a string of ground-breaking hits and produced a myriad of groups and bands that would massively influence the direction of popular music.
