In a follow-up to a story Global News reported on last week regarding a landlord in Etobicoke, Ont., who has been unable to evict a tenant who has failed to pay full rent since 2020, the landlord has hit another snag in his attempts to regain his property.

Deika Rafle has been living on the 32nd floor of a condo building for several years, owing owner Narinder Singh more than $46,000 for back-rent and utilities.

Singh finally got an order requiring her to move out later this month if she doesn't pay what she owes. But Rafle has hired a lawyer and the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) ordered a stay of the eviction on Tuesday — meaning she can remain indefinitely.

In what's being called a “broken system” at the LTB, a growing chorus of other landlords are also speaking up. Sean O’Shea has the details.
