A Sense of Place: Open for Dancing 2011
About this project
'A Sense of Place' is a feature-length film documenting the inspiration, creation and performances of Island Moving Co.'s biennial site-specific dance festival "Open For Dancing" filmed throughout Newport, RI. Choreographers, dancers and production crew are filmed preparing for and participating in the festival, which is a non-stop five days of creativity and exploration. We want to bring the joy and imaginative discovery of the festival to a larger audience. You can help give "A Sense of Place" to people who have never even been to our beautiful city.

Funders of 'A Sense of Place' will be a part of an historic event, a once in a lifetime documentation of the people, the places, the dances of Island Moving Company's "Open For Dancing." It is a transformative five days for everyone involved and we are excited to be able to expand our documentation of the festival. Open for Dancing is a festival of collaboration and creativity, pairing choreographers and artists at three stunning Newport landscapes and using "companies" of dancers from the community.
The documentary film will include interviews with the choreographers, participant dancers and crew as well as a behind the scenes look at the creation of three unique dances at breathtaking locations in Newport, RI. The site-specific dances allow viewers to travel through the Yew Forest at the Norman Bird Sanctuary, the Northeast Bastion at Fort Adams, under the branches of an ancient beech tree on the grounds of Bellevue House on Bellevue Avenue, and the wharves and streetscapes of downtown Newport. The film will allow viewers to see inside the creative choices of choreographers Marta Renzi, Zach Morris and Christine Sandorfi, as they work with dancers from the Island Moving Co. and from the community. Island Moving Co. is based in Newport, RI, where Artistic Director Miki Ohlsen has been creating groundbreaking site specific work for three decades.
In addition to Open for Dancing, the Company presents its Nutcracker in Newport's most romantic mansion, Rosecliff, where the audience moves with the action from room to room. Ohlsen created Dracula at Belcourt Castle with a similar format, making use of the ballrooms, organ lofts and galleries of a 50,000 square foot landmark on Newport's famed Bellevue Avenue. "A Sense of Place" has been filmed in the natural flowing beauty of the locations with a meticulous eye to detail, allowing the viewer a unique experience of art-making in these hidden locales in Newport, RI. The documentary will show OFD11 as not just a Dance Festival but an event, transforming Newport, RI "The City by the Sea" into the "City of Dance" for 1 week in September. Unfolding right before the lens, see what inspires the choreographers and dancers to create these one-of-a-kind dances.
All of the HD footage has been filmed and we are using this Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to complete and finalize the film for September 2012 Release in Newport, RI. All funds received will be used towards Post-Production, Editing, Sound Engineering, Mastering and Finalization of the feature film for theatrical release.
The film will premiere in September 2012 in Newport, RI
