The Schroth Method is an exercise-based approach specifically for scoliosis treatment. To effectively manage or treat scoliosis, exercises must qualify as Specific Exercises for Scoliosis (SSE). If an exercise is not an SSE, it won't be an effective treatment for scoliosis. The Schroth Method falls under the SSE category.
Today's Schroth Method has evolved into many variations. Few practitioners now follow the "pure" Schroth Method; instead, most practice a Schroth-inspired approach. Central to the Schroth technique is something known as rotational angular breathing. This specialized breathing technique involves teaching patients to breathe intentionally into the concave side of their scoliosis curvature, aiming to de-rotate the spine.
Rotational angular breathing doesn't literally mean putting more air into one lung than the other, as some mistakenly believe. Instead, it involves actively using the muscles on the concave side of the body to expand the rib cage more prominently. This practice is particularly effective for thoracic scoliosis, where there is often noticeable asymmetry in the rib cage—flattening on the concave side and protrusion, or a "rib hump," on the convex side.
The goal of Schroth breathing is to correct this imbalance by encouraging the ribs on the flattened side to expand outward, thereby assisting spinal de-rotation. This de-rotation is critical because scoliosis involves not just a lateral curve but also twisting of the spine. The ribs, attached to the spine, twist along with it, causing the visible hump and flattening.
By practicing rotational angular breathing, patients can significantly improve posture and chest symmetry. When combined with other corrective exercises or "mirror image" techniques, these breathing exercises help patients hold their body in a more corrected, balanced alignment. Over time, this approach can produce substantial improvement in spinal posture and reduce scoliosis progression.
Historically, the role of exercises in scoliosis treatment was questioned, particularly as surgical interventions became increasingly popular. However, recent years have seen a resurgence in conservative methods like the Schroth Method, highlighting the importance of targeted exercise and breathing therapies in managing scoliosis effectively.
Today, Schroth-style breathing is integrated into various scoliosis-specific exercise approaches, including SEAS, ScoliBalance, Dobomed, and Lyon methods. Each approach uses breathing components to improve chest expansion, rib cage shape, posture, and overall scoliosis management and treatment.
