Images of the early universe taken in great detail by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) show that it was far more complicated than previously thought. The majority of galaxies in the cosmos emerged between 2 and 5 billion years after the Big Bang, yet in Hubble photos, they were shown as chaotic blobs.

Now that JWST data has been converted into colors that the human eye can see, it is possible to glimpse a jewel box of galaxies as they looked between 8 and 11 billion years ago. Greater detail and fainter galaxies than ever before allow us to see what the human eye might have seen during these extremely early eras.
Scientists from various teams across the globe are rushing to analyze the data that the JWST acquired during its first month of full operation, and the new depiction of the young universe is only one of the surprises that are surfacing. Along with breathtaking views of nearby and distant galaxies, the first data have also sparked a competition to find the oldest galaxy.
