Born without legs due to a rare condition known as phocomelia, Kenyan Eunice Ruben displays amazing skills and qualities, including playing football and living fully on her own terms, despite facing negative perceptions from some in society.

Eunice, 31, is 59cm tall and weighs 26kg, but has proven that true worth isn't measured in centimetres.
Growing up, Eunice heard hurtful words that chipped away at her self-esteem. “One relative called me ‘half a person,’” she says softly.

“At times, I believed them. I used to hate myself.” The isolation and pain led Eunice down dark paths, including several suicide attempts.

“I felt trapped in a body that didn’t match who I was inside.” But Eunice’s story is not defined by hardship. It changed when a teacher saw beyond her stature. “My teacher told me, ‘You’re unique. You can do things even an able person cannot do.’'

That’s when I accepted myself. “That’s when I was born again,” Eunice remembers. “That encouragement was the first step toward accepting myself.”

Her sister Christine has been a steadfast source of love and support. “Being Eunice’s sister has taught me the true meaning of strength,” Christine says. “There’s a lot of fun in just being her sister,” Christine says with a smile.
