Getting dog in Machinarium will help you to get umbrella from lady and get into game's later stages.

This video will guide you to get the dog and exchange it.

It also includes the solution to arrow puzzle to make the crane work.

In order to get the dog you have to build a pump gun. Pump is in the cell next to your cell. And safe containing the gun is in the leftmost cell. Solution to puzzle of that safe is random. There's not a certain and obvious solution. You should solve it by yourself.
