STORYLINE:

Hundreds of protesters marched through the Peruvian capital, Lima, on Wednesday to demand the government give them back the jobs they say they lost illegally during the administration of former president, Alberto Fujimori.

Protesters marched towards the Labour Ministry building where some clashed with police.

They threw rocks at the police and burnt tyres. The police responded with tear gas and water cannons. There were no reported injuries or arrests.

The workers say the current president, Alejandro Toledo promised to give them back their jobs when he came to power three years ago.

Many Peruvians are unhappy with Toledo over his failure to keep campaign promises to create hundreds of thousands of jobs in a country where only 25 percent of the work force is employed full time.
