Singapore - An Introduction to Asia
Singapore, one of the most important world cities, is the best choice for your first destination in Asia. The rich ethnic mixture – Chinese, Malays, Indians, Eurasians and others – allows you to get an insight in some of the largest cultures of Asia. Due to Singapore’s excellent organization, it is nowadays the cleanest and safest country in Asia. Thanks to the strict regulations on hygiene, you can pretty much try all kinds of Asian cuisines without having to worry about food poisoning. It is the high standards in hygiene and the rich mixture of cultures that made Singapore to a foodie capital in Asia. Embracing the ethnic and religious diversity, it is food that unites all people of Singapore.
Having only 1 day of traveling, organizing your itinery matters a lot! In this video, I provide you a travel guide that maximizes the gain you can get out of visiting Singapore for only 1 day.
1. Start your visit at Chinatown and stay there from around 10am to 1pm. Spend some time at the festive market at Pagoda Street, dine at the foodie avenue (Smith Street) and visit the religious sites.
2. Head to Kampung Glam and spend roughly 2 hours 2 to 4pm. It is very much of an Islamic neighborhood that showcases Malay and Indian Muslim culture. Visit the Sultan Mosque, the carpet shops, Turkish and middle eastern restaurants and haji lane. The latter provides an interesting mixture of cafes, a perfect place to go out to have a beer.
3. Little India gives you a taste of how life back in the motherland on the subcontinent may look like. Hosting plenty of clothing and jewelry shops, Indian restaurants, hindu temples, mosques, churches and wet markets, you definitely gonna have enough impressions.
4. Marina Bay is nowadays the most famous and visited area of Singapore. I recommend to visit it last, so that you can attend the light shows that only take place after sunset. Visit the famous Marina Bay Sands mall and hotel, Bay Front, Gardens by the Bay and the Marina Bay Skypark.

Budget:
Singapore is often seen as a very expensive city. However, it is possible to travel on budget, because public transport is cheap. Riding the MRT is quite cheap (less than 2 SGD) and thus highly encouraged. Foodwise, Singapore is generally cheap, but of course dining can also be very expensive. Generally, foodcourts offer cheap dishes, a meal can cost 3-10 SGD including water or fruit juice. In ordinary restaurants you may spend about 20 SGD. I usually recommend people to share the food to enjoy more variety, its the culture here in Southeast Asia! The attractions I have presented are all free, Buddha temple, mosque, hindu temples no entrance fees, only the Sri Mammariaman temple imposes a photo ticket but admission is free. A visit to Gardens by the Bay is free! Going up to the OCBC skywalk bridge at the Gardens by the Bay costs 8 SGD, the queue gets usually very long near twilight. Queueing time can be about 30-40minutes. The lasershow at Bayfront is free too! So many great things in Singapore are actually free as you can see! A visit to the Marina Bay Skypark costs 23 SGD, unlimited time to stay (until closure at 11pm). The skypark is cheaper than the Flyer (Ferrywheel).
