Birds of a Feather

Like us the birds go on two legs,
they sing and dance and boast their shows
and tell of the glory of home:
tinsel and trinkets are constructed
with the finest of chosen wood,
gathered up from the forest's floor.

Even the most content of us
marvel at the borrower bird
and how he builds his humble nest
with sticks and gifts for his girl's grin.

We've always been jealous of him,
his wings reaching nearer the sun
than we, despite all of our thrusts
made into the realm of the gods.
of all human affinities
we hold an ambivalence for birds.

There is no amount of reason
that will ease you when the raven
settles down on Pallas's bust,
and words from his mimicking throat
serve only our suspicions of him.
Is he a bird, a beast, an angel?

That question was asked by primitive
instinct and stone age men alike;
this feathery creature was both
feared and idolized by minds
who sought to see the heavens above
and feared the fire below their feet.

When gazing at a bird, the egg
of all creation stirs within;
the beat of their heavenly wings,
the splendor of the woods alive
with the signing of the Wood Thrush
reminds us somehow of us.
