PALAGRUŽA - Croatia's most Isolated Lighthouse!

On the very south of Croatia stands the remote Palagruža archipelago and it's biggest lighthouse. Let me show you the changing of the lighthouse staff on Sušac and Palagruža. Palagruža archipelago consists of one larger island called Vela (Great) Palagruža, and a smaller one, Mala ('Little') Palagruža, as well as a dozen nearby rocks and reefs. Most people consider Palagruža as Croatia's most southern point but that title goes to a tiny island of Galijula 6km from Palagruža and Olevonta rock which is just 2 meters tall sometimes.

The islands are much closer to the Italian than the Croatian mainland. Vela Palagruža on about 52 nautical miles from Peljesac (95 km), 34 NM from Lastovo (Skrivena Luka) and 28 NM from Italy (53 km). Our journey starts from Vela Luka on the island of Korčula via Sušac island with it's sole lighthouse man and ends on Vela Palagruža with the lighthouse staff of two after a three hour voyage. The lighthouse was built in 1875 and is on the tallest point of the island at 101m.
