After crossing the Delaware River in a treacherous storm, General George Washington's army defeated a garrison of Hessian mercenaries at Trenton. The Battle of Trenton was a two-hour engagement that took place on December 26, 1776 In only one hour of fighting, the Continental Army captured nearly nine hundred Hessian officers and soldiers as well as a large supply of muskets, bayonets, swords, and cannons. The victory set the stage for another success at Princeton a week later and boosted the morale of the American troops.

* The Hessian infantry is leaving - the Old Barracks - their headquarters in Trenton to fight the approaching Continental Army.  
In 1758, the Old Barracks was constructed to house British troops during the French and Indian War. During the Revolutionary War, the barracks was one of Washington's military hospitals. Today, the building is home to an interpretive museum, galleries, gift shop, and meeting space.
The Battle of the Assunpink Creek, also known as the Second Battle of Trenton, was a battle between American and British troops that took place in and around Trenton, New Jersey, on January 2, 1777, during the American Revolutionary War, and resulted in an American victory.

British soldiers known as Redcoats (or the Regulars) fought in the Battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War.
The two regiments of British light dragoons that served in America, the 16th and 17th, wore red coats and leather crested helmets. 
The Hessian infantry wore blue coats and retained the Prussian style grenadier mitre cap with brass front plate.
The soldiers involved in the Battle of Trenton were Hessians - German mercenaries - hired by the British to fight in the American Revolution. They were known for their discipline and ferocity, and were well-paid.
There were  1,400 Hessian soldiers, led by Colonel Johann Rall in The Battle of Trenton.
Casualties: 22 killed, 92 wounded, 918 captured, and 400 escaped.

The Hessian forces lost 22 killed in action, including their commander Colonel Johann Rall, 83 wounded, and 896 captured. The Americans suffered only two deaths during the march and five wounded from battle, including a near-fatal shoulder wound to future president James Monroe.
