Hi Travis and Suzi! I recently shared with you an excerpt from Mahler’s First Symphony as one of two video to prepare you for his bleak “Songs of the Earth.” This is the second peace to prepare you, but it’s music by Russian composer, Pyotr Tchaikovsky (Pee’-ter Chai-kahv’-skee). If Mahler’s “Songs of the Earth” is absolutely pitch black, then Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique (path-eh-teek’) Symphony is more like “raw umber” (remember that crayon color in the Crayola box?) This was Tchaikovsky’s last work, and it is clear when listening to it that his mind was in a very dark place. Historians are not sure if Tchaikovsky’s death was an accident or a suicide, but it is undisputed that he died from cholera after drinking contaminated water. The symphony has four movements, but we’re just going to listen to the first movement, then we’ll finally move on to the Mahler. The clarinet solo near the end gets me every time. I really do not have a natural tendency to gravitate to sad or dark music, but these works are so well written and performed that I cannot help but to love them anyway!
