This week (October 2017) the last 33 of 250 buffalo were safely delivered from Marromeu Game Reserve to Zinave National Park in Mozambique, bringing to an end the wildlife translocation season for 2017. A total of 783 animals were successfully translocated to Zinave this year, which included 93 reedbuck and 387 waterbuck from Gorongosa National Park. So as to ensure the well-being of the wildlife, translocations are only executed during the cooler months of the year, and as he heat of summer now sets upon southern Africa, all translocation operations have been halted until next year. The development of Zinave as an integral component of Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA), was initiated by the government of Mozambique and gained momentum with the signing of a renewable 10-year co-management agreement between the Mozambican National Administration for Conservation Areas and Peace Parks Foundation in September 2015. Restoring large landscapes is what transfrontier conservation is all about, and wildlife translocations assist in reversing the decimation of these ecosystems. Since the signing of the Zinave co-mangement agreement in 2015, more than 1000 animals have been repopulated into the park.
