PRESS RELEASE (November 2003):
Local Non-Profit Announces "Idea Contest" to Benefit Ashland High School.
Rogue Valley Metaphysical Library and Event Center's First Annual Idea Contest. Six winners shared $2000 in prizes for entries in two categories: "Words" and "Pictures" (2-5 page essay, or an artistic collage).
The contest was open to current Ashland High School Students only. Entrants could either write a 1,000-word essay or create an artistic collage to communicate their response to one of four questions. The basic criteria for selecting the winners were sincerity, creativity, and clarity.
Prompts:
What is a passion that you long to express (i.e. hobbies, interests)? Why are you passionate about it?
Have you ever learned something "the hard way"? Explain what happened and what you eventually learned.
How would you like to see the world working and what part would you play in creating that outcome?
What are your top priorities in life? How do they impact your decisions?
All of the winners were announced at a lively awards ceremony hosted by Ashland personality Joanie McGowan on Thursday, December 4, 2003, at Ashland High School, Ashland, Oregon.
Jordan Pease, director of RVML said, "We are really excited about this. Thank you to Principal Schlecht and the other supporters, and Joanie McGowan hosting the awards ceremony is over-the-top exciting. Our intention is to inspire teenagers in Ashland, Oregon to imagine their role in creating a bright future.
A free booklet containing all the essay submissions is available at RVML, and the Artistic Category entries were displayed from December 5 - December 23, 2003 at the Nuwandart Gallery. The prizes were provided by a grant from the Sonoma County Community Foundation.
