STORYLINE
The First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond hand-delivered two books originally from the library of US President George Washington to his former home in Mount Vernon on Monday.
Salmond laid a wreath at the tombs of the first US president and his wife Martha, before presenting the books to Mount Vernon's president Curt Viebranz.
The books are two volumes of correspondence written by Washington during the American War of Independence and date from 1795.
They are entitled the "Official Letters to Honourable American Congress, Written, During the War between the United Colonies and Great Britain, by his Excellency, George Washington, Commander in Chief of the Continental Forces."
"There is no better place for such a valuable artifact than here in this beautiful place which symbolises the father of your nation," Salmond said.
The books were donated to Scotland's national collection in 1938 by Hugh Sharp, a Dundee jute industrialist, and were held by the National Library of Scotland for more than 70 years.
The Mount Vernon estate is trying to collect books that once belonged to Washington and the National Library of Scotland decided to help in the recreation of the first president of the United States' original book collection.
Salmond said that the books would be on loan at Mount Vernon during Scotland Week - a celebration of Scottish culture in the US and Canada that began on April 3 - before returning to Mount Vernon in September "for the great opening of the Fred W. Smith Library itself."
Mount Vernon officials intend the Fred W. Smith Library to be a "worldwide repository" of materials about Washington, and hope to be able to house all of Washington's papers on his estate, the organisation says on its website.
The books contain the president's signature on the title page of each volume.
