Mark Harrington in conversation with Andreas Stucken on his life and work. The video was recorded on Sunday, August 31st, 2025 at Neue Galerie Landshut on the occasion of the closing reception of Harrington´s exhibition „reflections“.

Mark Harrington’s images disrupt the viewer’s viewing habits and are therefore not immediately accessible.

They consist not only of a single image carrier; in his latest works, he combines up to four of them in different formats, each with a different reading direction. The painting material used is acrylic on linen, which is stretched over a grid-like wooden substructure. Other works, on the other hand, consist of acrylic on cardboard. Consequently, we are not only talking about pictures in the conventional sense, but about pictorial objects. However, all this is only the outer appearance, which conceals another level.

Harrington does not just paint; he literally works his way through his paintings physically. The visible surface consists of several layers of thickly applied paint, which are worked through with specially made tools while still wet. He does not use brushes.

The result is the frozen progress of the process in its final state, as well as color surfaces with lines that need to be viewed a second and third time in order to fully comprehend their beauty.

Mark Harrington was born in Bakersfield, California, in 1952. In terms of art history, he can be classified as an abstract and minimalist artist. He does not submit to the zeitgeist, but has consistently developed his position over the years and continues to defend it to this day.

Seen in this light, his conceptual work is unique in contemporary painting and deserves to be reflected upon, especially in an increasingly superficial world. That is why the exhibition title “reflections” is both a program and an invitation to reflect on the works of Mark Harrington.
