But what exactly are carbide guns? These crude, locally made devices use calcium carbide, an industrial chemical that reacts with water to release acetylene gas, causing powerful blasts. Experts warn that calcium carbide is hazardous, it can burn the skin, damage the lungs, and even cause permanent blindness.
The Madhya Pradesh government has now banned the sale and storage of these devices, but the bigger question remains, how did such dangerous materials become so easily available? And who’s really responsible…. the sellers, the authorities, or us as citizens?
