We had the privilege to spend time with the wonderful people of Unega Mountain Dog Rescue in Bellevue, Idaho. In several states, Great Pyrenees and Akbash are considered livestock and are treated horribly. Many are shot, beaten and abused when they are no longer useful for ranchers. Even though they are dogs, since they are classified as livestock, they have no legal protection.

Unega has been rescuing, raising, rehabilitating, socializing and placing these dogs into safe healthy homes for seven years now.

UMDR emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and support the Great Pyrenees & Akbash breed, and a desire for actions to speak louder than words. Established in 2015, we are an organization driven by progressive ideas, bold actions, and a strong foundation of support.

Their rescues are large working dogs that have been either abandoned, injured, misplaced, or just walked away from the local area sheep herds. Their mission is to save as many dogs as possible, young and old - giving them a second chance to grow old, and to be happy and healthy.
