What surprised astronomers was what they found mixed into that glowing environment. The space around the quasar contains a vast cloud of warm water vapor stretched across hundreds of light years. It isn’t a single pool or anything that resembles a body of water on Earth. It’s a thin but widespread mist of molecules drifting in a region filled with radiation and fast-moving gas.
This cloud holds far more water than anyone expected to see this early in cosmic history. To get that much, you need enough oxygen and hydrogen to combine and enough time for those molecules to settle into the surrounding gas. The black hole’s energy heats the cloud to temperatures far above what we experience on Earth, yet the vapor remains intact because it’s spread out over such a large volume. It’s dense by interstellar standards but still incredibly diffuse compared to any atmosphere we know.
