Industry and labour leaders, politicians and friends and family of those injured and killed in the workplace gathered at Jack Poole Plaza in downtown Vancouver for the annual Day of Mourning ceremony on April 28.

The Journal of Commerce was at the event and spoke to both Al Johnson, the vice president of prevention services for WorkSafeBC, and British Columbia Federation of Labour president
Irene Lanzinger about the need for constant vigilance from all levels in maintaining a safe work environment.

Lanzinger and Johnson also both remarked on the dangers of asbestos and other occupational diseases, and on the progress made in fall protection and other construction safety practices.

The Day of Mourning began in 1984 to formally commemorate workers killed in the workplace, and is now observed across the world.
