Welcome to the ninety-eighth in this series of poems and reflections on the themes of creativity, environment and mental health, drawing on my experience of bipolar.

This poem is from my latest book: GAIA. Being. Alive, in support of Tunbridge Wells Friends of the Earth. I was delighted to have the opportunity to read from the collection at the Greenpeace tent for the Extinction Rebellion Climate Action demonstration in April 2023, outside the Houses of Parliament.


The Gallery, Trinity

Together we hang paintings, photographs, poems
as if in the still quiet of a chapel

each artwork in response, as witness
to climate change, to ecocide –

sun through leaded glass –
colours of brushwork, words, suspended

portray the destruction of forests, pollution,
ominous futures, or the sharp light of flowers, of trees

no vestments, no incense, no sacrament
in this centre for the Arts, save art itself

and the soul from which it came.
