May 6th, 1994. “The Lion” Lennox Lewis defended his WBC World Heavyweight Championship against “The Enforcer” Phil Jackson in the main undercard bout of the Kevin Kelley vs Jesse Benavides main event.

Prefight records; Lewis 24(20)-0, Jackson 30(27)-1.

On December 14th 1992, the WBC awarded Lewis as its champion making him the 1st British world heavyweight titleholder in the 20th century; 93 years since the legendary Bob Fitzsimmons captured the World Heavyweight Championship via KO14 over James J. Corbett in June 1899.

Lennox was awarded the WBC Crown based on 2 factors;

1) An impressive KO2 victory over Donovan Ruddock which earned him a guaranteed shot against Riddick Bowe who lifted the the IBF, WBA & WBC World Heavyweight Titles from Evander Holyfield via UD12 in November 1992.

2) After several failed attempts to negotiate a mandatory title defense against Lewis, Bowe infamously vacated the WBC strap by dropping it into a trash can in a press conference.

In May and October 1993, Lennox successfully retained his WBC title twice and for his 3rd defense he was up against top rated contender Phil Jackson.

Going into the bout, the undefeated 28 year old Lewis had notable wins over the likes of Gary Mason, Mike Weaver, Tony Tucker, Tyrell Biggs, Frank Bruno & Donovan Ruddock. On the other hand, the 29 year old Jackson had defeated the likes of Carl Williams & Jeff Sims.

As a whole, the challenger was mostly dominated by the bigger, stronger and more skilled champion who decked him in rounds 1, 5 & 8.

Referee Arthur Mercante Sr halted the contest after the 3rd knockdown.

At the end of round 5, Lennox was deducted a point for sending Phil to the canvas with several shots after the bell. A foul which he stated was due to the fact that he did not hear the bell thus he continued punching seconds after the round was over.

Even though Phil Jackson lost every round en route to being stopped, to his credit he showed great courage by taking Lewis’ best shots and was able to land a few power punches time after time.
