In this video we discuss how to perform basic math operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) in excel. We go through an example of each inside a cell and cell to cell operations
Transcript/notes
To do basic math operations in excel, we start by typing in an equals sign, and the keyboard keys for doing basic math in excel are, the plus sign for addition, the minus sign for doing subtraction, the asterisk, which is shift 8 on the keyboard for doing multiplication and the forward slash for doing division.
We are going to do an example of each inside a single cell, starting with addition in cell C2. And we will do cell to cell in a moment.
For addition, start by typing in an equals sign, then type in the first number you want to add, for this example, 5. Next, type in a plus or addition sign, then the next number to add, 5. Then type in another plus sign and then a final number to add for this example, 10. Next hit then enter key and we have our answer of 20.
Now for subtraction, left click on the answer cell, here, cell C3, and again, start by typing in an equals sign, then type in the number or value you want to subtract from, say 20. Next, type in a minus sign, then type in the first number you want to subtract, 5. From here, type in another minus sign, then the next number you want to subtract, say 7. Next hit then enter key and we have our answer of 8.
Now for multiplication, left click on the answer cell, here, cell C4, and again, start by typing in an equals sign, then type in the first number or value you want to multiply, say 10. Next, type in a multiplication sign, shift 8 on the keyboard, then the next number to multiply, 6. From here type in another multiplication sign then the last number to multiply, say 2. Next hit then enter key and we have our answer of 120.
Now for division, which works the same way, as you see I have it typed in, in cell C5, with the forward slashes representing division signs. So, 20 divided by 5 is 4, and 4 divided by 2 is 2, so 2 should be our answer. I will hit the enter key, and we do get 2 as the answer.
Now for cell to cell operations. In cell C9 we want to add cell A9 and B9, so, I will left click on C9, then type in an equals sign. Next, I will left click on the first cell, A9, then type in a plus sign, and then left click on the cell to add to A9, cell B9. From here, I will hit the enter key and we have our answer of 10.
In cell c10 we are subtracting. Left click on c10, then type in an equals sign, then left click on A10, the cell we are subtracting from. Next type in a minus sign then left click on the cell we are subtracting, B10. And then hit the enter key and we have our answer of 15.
In cell C11, I have the formula set up for multiplication, as you see it is the same set up as addition and subtraction except with the multiplication sign. I will hit the enter key and we get 100.
And in cell C12, I have the formula set up for division, as you see it is the same set up as the other operations except with the division sign. I will hit the enter key and we get 4.
