Ever since I first heard Eric Clapton play this Robert Johnson classic, "Crossroads," with his band, Cream, I knew right away it changed me. It turned my world upside down in the best way possible. It just sounded so rootsy and bluesy and I wanted in. NK Band covered a snippet of this song at one of of our House of Blues shows years ago and we covered Clapton's guitar solo note for note, but when it came time to take the leap and start a blues trio, there was no other song that was more perfect to encapsulate the NK Power Trio album and experience than this song. "Crossroads" made me want to meet every blues musician in the world because of the concept. Robert Johnson lived for the blues and died for the blues. The crazy thing when I started doing my research about this song was how so many people quote the Clapton version, but his version also doesn't sing the correct words from Robert Johnson's original recordings which there are only 2 versions of. Once I realized this, I knew we had to accurately sing the correct words from version 1 which is what you hear on my album, CROSSROADS. The best part about this song is it made me go visit one of the first real bluesmen I knew of in my hometown of Arcadia, Pat O'Brien, who was one of my hometown blues legends. I asked Pat and his band to headline when we played our first gig as a blues trio because of how much his influence meant to me. That started what is now an amazing friendship with Pat O'Brien and many other incredible blues musicians. I love this song. I love what it did for my life and I love how it took me down to the crossroads for all of my musical aspirations. Hope it takes you down to the crossroads, too.
