How do you signal that you are trustworthy? How do you judge if others are trustworthy? How do you perform these checks online?

I have worked in offices most of my professional life. When you visit someone’s office you see how many people work there. You see their furniture and how thick their carpet is. You can look at their diplomas and the awards on their walls. All of these items help form your opinion of the organization. We call them trust indicators – does this organization appear to be trustworthy?

Now that so much interaction is online, what can you do to signal trust online? Suggestions include having a clear privacy policy prominently displayed. Another best practice is to have an address, a real physical location listed on your site. How about some seals of approval? Is your organization a member of the Better Business Bureau or any other organizations that issue approvals?

When you are making a decision about who you want to deal with what factors do you take into account? What do you want to know? Then consider your own online presence. How are you signaling that you are trustworthy?
