Porn, like most things in life, has the potential to be either helpful or harmful, depending on how you use it.
If you watch porn, it’s worth being aware of the common problems with free mainstream internet porn: its ambiguities around consent, its problematic categorisation centered on shock value, and stuff like race and body types, its frequent and often extreme misogyny and violence, the tendency for sites to auto play clips and escalate to more and more extreme content, and the type of compulsive relationship to porn consumption that this can sometimes create for the viewer.
It’s also worth being aware that in response to these issues- a growing set of filmmakers are creating “ethical porn”- adult entertainment that is ethically produced (and therefore not free- performers deserve to be paid and have their rights secured!) which seeks to present sex in a healthier, more gender equal, and more emotionally nuanced manner.
