The island of Burano is 670 m long and 450 m wide and lies about 7 km northeast of Venice in the lagoon. Actually, there are 4 islands separated by channels and connected by many bridges. Today, approx. 2700 people live in Burano. The island is known for its picturesque colored houses but also by its needle embroideries.
We arrive by boat in the south of the island, in the canal rio Mandracchio, near the church of Saint Martin Vescovo. The church tower can compete with the leaning tower to Pisa. The canal branches off in a right angle and is now called rio Terranova, spanned by a pretty little bridge. The straightforward continuation was the Rio Tera, but one filled it in. The street is now called Via Baldassare Galuppi. It is the central shopping street and promenade of the island.
In front of it is Piazza Baldassare Galuppi, the main square in front of the Catholic Church. In the center is a monument to Baldassare Galuppi, an Italian composer born in Burano. Coming from the south, you see Merletti dalla Olga to the right. Here, one still offers original Burano embroidery.
We cross the square and walk along Via Baldassare Galuppi. Many restaurants and cafes invite you to stop. The blaze of color is stimulating and inspiring. Many narrow lanes branch off to the right and left.
About halfway up, another canal branches off to the right, the rio Pontinello. Again, a curved pedestrian bridge leads across the canal. Cars are not to be seen on the island. They are probably forbidden, and they have no place.
We turn into Calle Galoppi and then return through Calle Babuini. There are hardly any tourists in the side streets and you are almost alone.
We walk along the Fondamenta S. Mauro and then turn right into Viale Marcello. At the ferry terminal Burano SX per f.te Nove we wait until our group has gathered again.
For lunch, we take the boat to Trattoria Ai Cacciatori on the neighboring island of Mazzorbo, connected to Burano by a pedestrian bridge. Massimo and Miki have again organized everything perfectly. The head of the restaurant and the chef expect us already.

Burano ist eine Insel, 670 m lang und 450 m breit, die ca. 7 km nordöstlich von Venedig in der Lagune liegt. Eigentlich sind es 4 Inseln, die durch Kanäle getrennt und durch zahlreiche Brücken verbunden sind. Heute leben ca. 2700 Menschen ständig auf Burano.
Bekannt ist die Insel durch ihre malerischen bunten Häuser, aber auch durch seine Nadelstickereien.
Wir legen mit dem Boot im Süden der Insel, im Kanal rio Mandracchio, nahe der Kirche zum Heiligen Martin Vescovo an. Der Kirchturm kann mit dem schiefen Turm zu Pisa konkurrieren. Der Kanal zweigt im rechten Winkel ab und nennt sich nun rio Terranova, der durch eine hübsche kleine Brücke überspannt wird. Die geradlinige Fortsetzung war ursprünglich der rio Tera der aber zugeschüttet wurde. Die Straße heißt heute Via Baldassare Galuppi. Sie ist die zentrale Einkaufs- und Flaniermeile der Insel.
Davor liegt aber die Piazza Baldassare Galuppi, der Hauptplatz vor der katholischen Kirche. In der Mitte befindet sich ein Denkmal von Baldassare Galuppi, einem italienischen Komponisten, der in Burano geboren wurde. Wenn man den Platz von Süden kommend betritt, ist direkt rechts das Geschäft Merletti dalla Olga, wo noch originale Stickereien aus Burano angeboten werden.
Wir überqueren den Platz und gehen die Via Baldassare Galuppi entlang. Viele Restaurants und Cafes laden zur Einkehr ein. Die Farbenpracht ist herrlich anregend und inspirierend. Zahlreiche schmale Gassen zweigen rechts und links ab.
Ungefähr auf halber Höhe zweigt rechts ein weiterer Kanal ab, der rio Pontinello. Auch hier führt eine geschwungene Fußgängerbrücke über den Kanal. Autos sind auf der ganzen Insel nicht zu sehen. Vermutlich sind sie verboten, aber sie hätten auch keinen Platz.
Wir biegen ab in die Calle Galoppi und kehren anschließend durch die Calle Babuini wieder zurück. In den Seitenstraßen sind kaum Touristen unterwegs und man ist fast alleine.
Wir gehen die Fondamenta S. Mauro entlang und biegen dann in die Viale Marcello rechts ab. Beim Fährterminal Burano SX per f.te Nove warten wir bis unsere Gruppe wieder beisammen ist.
Zum Mittagessen fahren wir mit dem Boot zur Trattoria Ai Cacciatori auf der Nachbarinsel Mazzorbo, die mit Burano über eine Fußgängerbrücke verbunden ist. Massimo und Miki haben wieder alles perfekt organisiert und der Chef des Restaurants und der Küchenchef erwarten uns bereits.
