Dalmandi Demolition Drive Faces Anger: Shopkeepers Claim Low Compensation and No Time to Vacate

The demolition drive in Dalmandi to make way for the Kashi Vishwanath Dham access road has sparked anger and disappointment among local shopkeepers. While the administration has begun clearing old structures to develop the ₹215-crore, 650-meter-long corridor, many traders allege that the process has been rushed and compensation remains inadequate.

Several shopkeepers claim they were given very little time to remove their belongings before the demolition began. “We are not against development, but at least give us enough time to shift our goods. They started breaking shops without proper notice,” said one affected trader.

Others allege that the compensation amount offered by the government does not match the value of their shops or the losses incurred. “The amount we received can’t even cover half our setup. Our families depend on these small businesses,” another shopkeeper added.

Officials, however, maintain that the demolition is being carried out only for properties whose owners have accepted compensation and that the project is essential to ease congestion and improve access to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

Over 100 police personnel and a company of RAF have been deployed to maintain order, with drone surveillance ensuring smooth execution of the drive.

Once completed, the new road will feature footpaths, better lighting, and dedicated spaces to promote Banaras’s handloom and handicraft products, transforming Dalmandi into a model corridor.

For now, the development push has been met with mixed reactions — hope for modernization, but heartache over lost livelihoods.
