Описание к видео Is the Byrd Shelix Head REALLY Quieter on a DeWalt Planer?

Helical cutters have become quite popular for woodworking planers and jointers. They have a high-quality finish and run quieter—but how quieter?

Installing a helical cutter head on your wood planer or jointer has strong advantages. The head removes material via a shearing motion, making for a superior cut with much less tearout.

Regular cutters are set in a straight line (hence the name straight blades) and cut in a chopping action. This works adequately as long as the knives are relatively sharp, there are no knicks in the blade, and the feed rate is low enough to reduce “scalloping.” The trailing edge of a piece of stock running through the planer or jointer is especially at risk of damage as the last piece is not backed up and will tend to chip off. This is a good reason to cut components oversized until final fitting.

The helical cutter will cut quieter than the straight-blade units due to the cutters' diagonal shearing action. The helical cutter head will also run quieter when the machine is running but not cutting wood. due to the way the cutting edges encounter the air.

We measured sound levels with the stock and Byrd Shelix® cutter heads installed. We measured ambient sound - the machine running (but not planing stock) with the dust collection system attached and operating. We then measured sound levels with the same board being planed and the same amount of stock being removed each time.

There were notably lower sound levels with the Byrd Shelix head installed. The results are:

Stock head, ambient sound level: 107 dB.
Shelix head, ambient sound level: 97 dB.
Stock head, while planing test stock: 109 dB.
Shelix head, while planing test stock: 96-97 dB.

How significant are these readings? Remember that the dB scale is logarithmic, meaning each 10-point increase indicates a ten-fold increase in sound level or sound pressure. The inverse is true as well - a 10-point decrease in the scale indicates a ten-fold decrease in sound level. This means that a sound at 20 dB is 10 times more intense than a sound at 10 dB, and a sound at 30 dB is 100 times more intense than a sound at 10 dB. Wow!

Back to our test. Because there was approximately a 10 dB difference between the stock and Bryd Shelix® head both for ambient and cutting sound levels, the helical head is 10x quieter than the stock head. That is remarkable!

The benefits of the helical cutters come at a cost. The Byrd Shelix® 40 cutter head for the DeWalt® DW735 is about $550. They come in two configurations: factory OEM (original equipment manufacturer) dimensions and the other has a reduced circumference that is easier to install.

Byrd Tools also offers the DeWalt® DW735 with their head installed as a package deal. This voids the warranty from DeWalt®, but the quality of the tool and head is high enough that it is unlikely that you’ll have issues.

Be sure to specify whether you want the reduced or original diameter configuration. The smaller unit allows you to insert the new head into the machine without removing all the inserts.

This is a lifetime investment, with replaceable and repositionable cutters. You can get 4 uses out of each of the 40 cutters. This allows you to rotate a section if a knick occurs, and the knives are relatively inexpensive, currently about $4 each (in a pack of 10).

If you are interested in installing a Byrd Shelix® head on your DeWalt® DW735, we show you how the removal of the original head and installation of the Byrd Shelix® head is done in this episode:
