Today, Lucky visits the Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, the final resting place of Tiburcio Vásquez (1835-1875), a notorious Californio bandit who became one of the most infamous figures of the California Gold Rush era. Born in Monterey, California, into a prominent Californio family, Vásquez grew up in a turbulent period marked by the Mexican-American War and the transition of California to American control. He turned to a life of crime in response to the social and economic upheaval faced by many Californios during this period.
Vásquez was involved in numerous criminal activities, including horse theft, cattle rustling, and stagecoach robberies. His most infamous crime was the 1873 Tres Pinos raid, where several men were killed. Despite his criminal activities, Vásquez was seen by some as a folk hero, fighting against the injustices faced by the Californio community. He was known for his charisma, intelligence, and ability to evade capture for years.
Vásquez's crime spree came to an end in 1874 when he was captured in Southern California. He was tried and convicted for murder and hanged in 1875. Today, Tiburcio Vásquez remains a controversial figure, viewed by some as a symbol of resistance and by others as a ruthless outlaw.
