A name server, also known as a DNS (Domain Name System) server, is a crucial component of the internet that helps translate human-readable domain names into IP (Internet Protocol) addresses. Every device connected to the internet, including websites, servers, and other resources, has an associated IP address, which is a numerical label that uniquely identifies it on the internet.

The DNS system simplifies the process of accessing websites and services by allowing users to type in familiar domain names (like www.example.com) instead of numeric IP addresses (e.g., 192.168.1.1). When you enter a domain name into your web browser or other network application, your device contacts a name server to resolve the domain name into its corresponding IP address.

Here's how the process works:

You enter a domain name into your web browser.
Your device checks its local DNS cache to see if it already knows the corresponding IP address. If not, it proceeds to the next step.
Your device contacts a DNS resolver provided by your internet service provider (ISP) or a public DNS resolver like Google's or Cloudflare's.
The DNS resolver, if it doesn't already have the IP address for the domain in its cache, queries the authoritative name servers responsible for the specific top-level domain (TLD) of the requested domain (e.g., .com, .org).
The authoritative name server for that TLD may not have the IP address information directly but can direct the resolver to the authoritative name server for the second-level domain (e.g., example.com).
The authoritative name server for the second-level domain contains the IP address information for the specific domain name (e.g., www.example.com). It provides this information to the DNS resolver.
The DNS resolver caches the IP address information and sends it back to your device.
