The drill will test the country’s air defence and counter-UAS capabilities, drawing lessons from Operation Sindoor, a recent confrontation with Pakistan where drones played a decisive role. Cold Start aims to recreate aspects of these engagements, allowing the armed forces to identify gaps, refine tactics, and strengthen aerial readiness. The exercise is closely linked to India’s long-term Sudarshan Chakra system, expected by 2035, which will function as an integrated network to counter drones, hypersonic weapons, and other aerial threats. As drones become central to surveillance, precision strikes, and asymmetric warfare, robust counter-UAS capabilities are vital for national security and protecting strategic assets. Cold Start serves both as a demonstration of readiness and a clear signal of India’s commitment to maintaining aerial dominance in South Asia.
