Furaha Youngblood reads "Rue du serpent" and "Adrift", two of her poems. Furaha gave the readings at an Africa Migration Report Poetry Anthology Series event hosted online, on 17 October 2024, by Forced Migration and The Arts, CivicLeicester and Regularise.[1]

ABOUT THE POET

Furaha Youngblood was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and given the name Elizabeth Ann Youngblood. She grew up in Watts, a district of South Central Los Angeles and took the circuitous route in completing her education, eventually earning a Masters Degree in Broadcast Communications Art, and a Secondary Teaching credential. These were the tools she used to teach on the international education circuit --Tunisia, la Cōte dÍvoire, Panama -- from 1992 to 2008. The experiences she gained became the foundation for her evolution as a writer. As a broadcast journalist, from 1972 to 1979, her professional name was Furaha Hiyati ("Joy of my life").

ABOUT THE POETRY ANTHOLOGY SERIES

The Africa Migration Report Poetry Anthology Series is a multi-year, multi-volume initiative that is publishing poetry anthologies exploring themes around African and African diasporic migration and (im)mobility. The series was inspired by the "Africa Migration Report: 2nd Edition" published by the African Union Commission and International Organisation for Migration in March 2024.[2]

The first collection in the series, Japa Fire: An Anthology of Poems on African and African Diasporic Migration (CivicLeicester, 2024) was published just before Christmas last year.[3]

Our call for submissions[4] is open 365 days a year, because every day is Africa Day, and because we would like to keep the conversation going for as long as it takes for the African migrant to be treated with dignity and respect on the continent and around the world.
