"There is no diesel and no electricity. My husband works at a print house. So since the start of the summer and through the season, we have been collecting papers and everything else available to store in the house. We burn them later in the winter because we have learned year after year that there will be sanctions against us, and that there won’t be any diesel available for us."

STORYLINE:
As temperatures keep dropping, many in northern Syria continue to struggle with a fuel crisis that has deepened.

Drivers have had to wait in long lines for hours at fuel stations around Idlib, the country's last rebel-held area.

The crisis comes during the winter season when many people rely on diesel for heating.

Syria's 11-year long conflict has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced half the country’s pre-war population of 23 million.

It caused damage worth tens of billions of dollars and has also hit hard the country’s oil and gas facilities.

Sanctions on Syria and the impact of the global energy crisis are palpable in Idlib, where people are struggling to find fuel for heating.

In Aleppo, a fuel shortage is threatening many this winter as diesel has become expensive and hard to find.

Mezgin Yousef, a 47-year-old mother living in Aleppo, says she does not know how she will keep her children warm this winter.

She has been burning paper that her husband brings home from his job at a print house.

"We have learned year after year that there will be sanctions against us, and there won’t be any diesel available for us," she said.

Hospitals like the Al-Shaheed Khalid Al-Fajr medical facility in Aleppo are also threatened with disruptions because of the fuel shortages.
