This was the second day of a late May peak bagging weekend in Big Bear. Starting from a spot just off Coxey Road at the intersection of old Forest Road 3N14 in the San Bernardino National Forest (34.32262, -117.05833), we did a loop hike summiting 4 peaks. First up was Shay Mountain, summit at 2.6 miles, mostly cross country. Next up was Ingham Peak, about 1.7 miles of cross country and faint use trail. Backtracking a little to a saddle we next climbed up to the summit of Little Shay Mountain at 5.3 miles. After a snack break on the summit, we dropped down the northeast side of Little Shay to the old Hawes Ranch area from where we headed up the west ridge to Hawes, picking up a faint use trail once we were up the ridge a little ways. From the summit of Hawes we retraced our steps down the ridge and across the valley where we picked up a trail back to where we had parked. All four peaks are on the Sierra Club Hundred Peaks Section List.

Total for the day as measured on the Gaia GPS iPhone app was 9.45 miles with 2,566’ of elevation gain. I found this hike to be a little more challenging than the stats would suggest, probably because most of the hike was cross country and up and down some fairly steep terrain. Views were great and we enjoyed getting this one done. From Fawnskin the 10 mile drive on the rough and occasionally rocky dirt road was time consuming, taking close to an hour each way.
