Fire safety is a major source of concern in both our living and work environment. Advancement in science and technology have resulted in development of electrical and electronic equipment which can cause fire hazards due to equipment failure. Fire hazards are fatal to human live and destructive to industrial and household properties. Thus, prompt response to fire emergency can save lives and properties.
Installation of Fire Detection and Alarm System (FDAS) in both living and business quarters is a necessity.
In developing countries of the world, FDAS is not a priority during buildings construction as there is lack of expertise in field of Installation and Maintenance of FDAS.
Thus, this research project strives to Design and Simulate a Conventional Fire Detection and Alarm System. Optical Smoke Detectors, Manual Call Points (MCPs) and Alarm Indicators were installed in 5 blocks. The 5 blocks were divided into 3 zones.
When there is fire outbreak in any of the blocks, once generated smoke rises above preset value, the smoke sensor is designed to detect presence of fire and send a fire active signal to the Fire Alarm Control panel (FACP). The FACP then activates the alarm indicators warning house occupants who can now response promptly by checking the display screen to confirm the zone that is active. House occupants can also manually activate the FACP using the MCPs to alert other occupants of fire condition.
Atmel 80C51 programmable microcontroller was used in programming the interaction of smoke detectors and manual call points with alarm indicators.
Mide Studio Compiler was used in compiling the program codes. Project Circuit Diagram Design and Simulation were done using Proteus 8 Professional.
Deployment of this simple project design in real world environment will assist in prompt response to fire outbreak thus saving lives and properties.
