CPT coding for critical care services is very confusing. Codes are in three different areas within of the Evaluation and Management section. Most codes specify a specific age of the patient. Some codes can be used for outpatient, inpatient or patient transport services. Some codes are reported by minutes with patient, while others are reported “per day.” The guidelines are buried in long paragraphs.

This is a summary of each type of critical care service (outpatient, inpatient, in transport)
