A trip to Sunderland for some County Cup Last 16 action as Southwick FC of the Sunderland Sunday League hosted Sedgefield St Edmunds from the Durham Sunday League.

Before kick-off I caught up with John from Southwick, who spoke about today’s big cup tie and reflected on his goal in the FA Sunday Cup clash vs Beeston Cosa Nostra last week. Confidence was clearly high in the camp — but they knew this would be a tough test.

On the pitch, it was a really even start with both sides looking lively. But after around 15 minutes, Southwick struck first. A dangerous low cross was cleverly left by the first attacker and finished smartly inside the box to give the hosts the lead! 1–0.

Chances came and went for both teams in an open first half, but neither side could find another breakthrough before the break. Southwick went in narrowly ahead at half-time.

The second half is where the game truly swung. A Southwick corner caused chaos, and the Sedgefield keeper unfortunately punched the ball into his own net… 2–0. Moments later, a penalty was awarded and calmly converted to make it 3–0 with just an hour played.

Southwick were in full control now and soon added a fourth to put real daylight between the sides. Sedgefield had opportunities to get back into it but couldn’t make their chances count — a theme that defined their afternoon.

Late on, Southwick were awarded another penalty… and this one was a Panenka down the middle to seal a 5–0 win in style!

A clinical performance from Southwick sees them march into the County Cup Quarter Finals, while Sedgefield will feel the scoreline didn’t reflect how competitive the game actually was.

Cup football. Fine margins. Ruthless finishing.
