“The Abyss” is one of the most haunting, vulnerable songs I’ve heard in a long time and turning it into a piano arrangement took me over a month of writing, experimenting, and pushing past my limits.
This version became my own journey through the emotions of the song:
a confession → a breakdown → a release → a transcendence.

This is also my first video on my new piano, and honestly… this song felt like the perfect one to inaugurate the new setup with. Its cinematic nature, its intimacy, its chaos - it matches my whole soul right now.

🎬 Arrangement breakdown

0:00 – 1:30 | PART I: The Confession

The song opens with “three-hands illusion” where I keep the Cm arpeggios flowing while carrying the vocal line and bass movement.

This part is meant to feel like someone sitting alone in the dark room, gathering the courage to admit truths they’ve been avoiding.
Then, gentle chords (0:35) lead into that emotional “let me close my eyes with dignity… (lyrics)” section where the first wave of power hits (1:00)

1:30 – 1:57 | PART II: The Descent (Interlude)

I expanded the original interlude here with a new section - jumping between distant low and high registers across the piano, inspired by Animenz’s snow halation dramatic ending.

This is the moment where the confession becomes a fall.
Your heart drops.
Your mind spirals.
You’re pulled deeper into the abyss.

1:57 – 3:15 | PART III: Breakdown / Percussive Groove

For the pre-chorus and chorus, I leaned into a percussive, head-nodding groove - keeping that signature middle C pulse from the original while layering every instrumental line on top.

It becomes rhythmic, frantic, almost heartbeat-like.
This is the emotional collapse of the song, where everything you admitted in Part I finally hits you at full force.

3:15 – 5:26 | PART IV: Lana’s Descent → The Ascension

When Lana’s voice begins to fade in the original, I slowed the tempo and let her “heavenly haunting” presence take over the entire arrangement.

I added an extra measure here (4:28) I just wasn’t ready to let that moment go.
Then instead of ending like the original, I exploded into a chaotic final run across the entire keyboard… a final release of everything the song built up. ()

During the climax, my left hand plays tremolo chords that evolve from single notes → chords → octaves to create the feeling of ascending out of the abyss.

This was one of the hardest technical passages I’ve practiced in months - but it was worth every hour.
